174 women who had previously given birth to an infant with spina
bifida were recruited and were followed up through their subsequent
186 pregnancies. They were divided up as to those on a “Good
Diet”, those on a “Fair Diet” and those on a “Poor
Diet”. Outcomes were as follows:

(no. 88) |

Of those on a “Good” or “Fair” diet, only
3 babies were miscarried out of 141 - making 1 pregnancy in 47. This
compares well with the UK average of 1 in 4.
Of those on the “Poor” diet, 23 out of 45, or just over
half the babies were lost.
